This episode of Civil War Digital Digest examines the life of Colonel Hans Christian Heg of the 15th Wisconsin. A Norwegian immigrant and Abolitionist Republican politician, Heg raised a regiment from the Norwegian-American community. He was killed in action while leading a brigade at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863.

The Battle of Midway

Andrew was interviewed as part of the USS Kearsarge's annual Battle of Midway celebration this year. The Public Affairs Division on board used that interview to create the following video on America's improbable victory in that crucial battle.

​

The Battle of Midway is too often characterized as a victory due solely to the luck of the Americans. In fact, it was a carefully laid trap, a gamble based on incomplete intelligence. The skill and bravery of the American aviators cannot be understated. They pushed home their attacks, despite terrible losses, navigating to the end of their range and striking as the opportunity arose. In only a few minutes the course of the entire war in the Pacific changed.
